Ask me what my favorite type of decor is, and I will immediately respond by saying Midcentury Modern. Having worked at an interior decor company for almost three years, I’ve fawned over many rooms decorated by the likes of Jonathan Adler and Kelly Wearstler, each of whom brings a 70s vibe to their interiors. So you can imagine how enamored I’ve become with The VNYL, a new four story East Village bar & lounge that boasts some of the most beautiful 70s-glam decor in the city. And their cocktails met the high standards of the space, from an inventive cumin-laced champagne drink to a homemade milk punch. I sampled tons drinks and food on their menu to give you guys the lowdown (I know, I suffer for you guys). Below are some of my favorites.
If you want to see more photos of the space, check out my post about the decor on my sister site, You Must Love Life.
(pictured on the right) Vida Mezcal, Cappelletti, Bitter Rhubarb Amaro, Chamomile Syrup, Grapefruit Shrub, Pineapple, Lemon Juice, Pink Peppercorn
It’s hard to find a cocktail that makes mezcal an equal player in the cup. Here it’s perfectly balanced and adds a hint of smokiness to the bright blend of citrus fruits.
(pictured on the left) Singhani, Macchu Pisco, St. Germain, Green & Red Grapes, Green Apple, Lemon, Orange, Anise, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Yerba Matte, Lapsang Souchong, Demerara & Milk
The VNYL specializes in house-made milk punch, which actually isn’t milky at all. It’s a filtering process from the 1800s that uses milk to clarify the cocktail until it’s crystal clear. This particular punch was refreshing and sweet, with the flavor of the grapes really coming through.
Absolut Elyx, Kummel Liqueur, Chamomile Liqueur, Veuve Rich, White Cucumber Purée, Ghost Citrus & Mint Essence
This cocktail really surprised me, as it was equally sweet, refreshing and spicy. The Kummel Liqueur, which is infused with caraway seeds, makes for a delicious savory finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.
Corn Tortilla, Romaine, Pineapple Pico De Gallo & Jerk Crema
It’s easy to think you’re gonna need a second dish when you see that there are just three tacos in an order. But make no mistake–these tacos are piled high and loaded with flavor. You may need a friend to help!
Fresh Basil Pesto & Burrata
For the vegetarians or those who want some light fare to go along with their drinks, this dish hits the spot. The artistically arranged crunchy zucchini are the perfect vessel for the creamy burrata.
Fried Onion, Avocado, Martin’s Roll, American Cheese, Russian Dressing & Butter Lettuce
Ever been at an upscale bar, and all you’re craving is fast food? These sliders, modeled after the In-N-Out Burger, will hit the spot. And they have better buns.
Grilled Plum, Candied Lemon Zest, Grilled Scallion & Steamed Buns
I think these were my favorite of the night. The fluffy bao buns act as the perfect canvas for the duck, which is tender and packed with intense umami flavor.
